Im April 2007 veröffentlichte die Mozilla Foundation mit Thunderbird 2.0 ein neues Major-Release des Open Source E-Mail Clients (wir berichteten). Nun steht mit der Version Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.19 ein neues Update zum Download bereit.
Die neue Version wird auch bereits über die interne Updatefunktion von Thunderbird verteilt.
Der weit verbreitete, kostenlose OpenSource Packer 7-Zip ist heute in der neuen Finalversion 4.63 erschienen. 7-Zip kann neben dem eigenen .7z Format auch die meisten anderen gängigen Archive wie .zip oder .rar verarbeiten.

Realtek hat mit der Version 2.13 ein neues Treiberpaket für seine High Definition Audio-Codecs veröffentlicht. HDA-Soundchips aus Realteks ALC88x Serie sind z.B. auf vielen aktuellen AM2 und neuen AM2+ Mainboards anzutreffen und bieten 8-Kanal High Definition Sound.
Die Version 2.22 des Tweaking-Programms für ATI- und NVIDIA-Grafikkarten ist erschienen und bietet zahlreiche Verbesserungen. RivaTuner bietet Zugriff auf zahlreiche nicht über den GeForce- bzw. Catalyst-Treiber erreichbare Einstellungsmöglichkeiten.

Das AMD OverDrive Tool (AOD) ist in der Version 2.1.5 erschienen. SystemRescueCd, eine auf Gentoo basierende Linux Boot-CD, ist in der Version 1.1.3 erschienen. Mit der CD können zahlreiche Aufgaben rund um das Bearbeiten und Erstellen von Partitionen vorgenommen werden. Dabei werden zahlreiche Dateisysteme unterstützt.

Nach langer Zeit scheinbarer Ruhe hat das Team um die Entwickler des freien Open-Source MPEG4-ASP Video-Codecs XviD eine neue Version 1.2.1 präsentiert. Aus (MPEG4)-Lizenzgründen dürfen die XviD-Entwickler keine fertig kompilierten Binaries zur Verfügung stellen. Daher hat es bis heute gedauert, ehe einer der beiden XviD-Haudegen - in diesem Fall Koepi - das Installationspaket für Windows erstellt hat.
Wir haben den neuen XviD 1.2.1 bereits einem kurzen Praxistest unterzogen. Mit VirtualDub wurde ein DVB-S Videostream im 2-pass Mode ins XviD-Format umgewandelt. Dabei wurde absichtlich auf sämtliche Filter verzichtet, um die reine Codec-Geschwindigkeit ermitteln zu können. Auf einem AMD Phenom X4 System war die neue Version 1.2.1 dabei erheblich schneller, als die ohnehin schon optimierte alte Version 1.2_smp auf Basis der offiziellen Version 1.1.3:

In diesem Fall scheinen die SMP- und SSE3-Optimierungen auf dem Phenom gefruchtet zu haben. Die Entwickler sprechen zwar auch von SSE4-Optimierungen, jedoch darf davon ausgegangen werden, dass damit Intels SSE4.x Befehle meint sind und nicht AMDs SSE4a, die zwar beide einen ähnlichen Namen tragen, aber zueinander nicht kompatibel sind. Auf Intel Prozessoren ab dem Penryn dürfte der Boost durch die neue Version daher noch größer ausfallen.
Ansonsten hat sich am Encoder-Interface nichts geändert. Alte XviD-Freunde werden sich auch mit der neuen Version sofort zurecht finden. Danke hoenii für den Hinweis.
Für Windows Server 2008 und Windows Vista hat Microsoft nun eine Beta des Service Pack 2 zum Download bereitgestellt.
Microsoft weist daraufhin, dass dies eine Vorabversion darstellt und nur für technisch versierte Anwender empfohlen wird.

Die Virtualisierungssoftware VirtualBox ist kürzlich in einer neuen Version 2.0.6 erschienen. Das von Sun vorangetriebene Projekt ist OpenSource und unterstützt als Host-Betriebssysteme alle wichtigen Plattformen von Mac OS X über Linux, Windows, Solaris bis hin zu OpenSolaris.
Mit einer Virtualisierungssoftware lassen sich ganze virtuelle PCs auf einem Computer simulieren. Dies ist sinnvoll einerseits zu Testzwecken, um sich ein neues Betriebssystem ansehen zu können ohne dazu einen zusätzlichen PC kaufen oder aufbauen zu müssen und andererseits im Produktivbetrieb, etwa bei Webservern, wo es unwirtschaftlich wäre für jede kleine Webseite einen eigenen Server zu installieren. Stattdessen können mehrere vServer auf einer Maschine laufen, was Ressourcen schont und Geld spart und im Gegensatz zu vHosts können die Kunden ihren vServer ganz normal administrieren als wäre es ein eigenes Gerät.
