Realtek hat mit der Version 2.46 ein neues Treiberpaket für seine High Definition Audio-Codecs veröffentlicht. HDA-Soundchips aus Realteks ALC88x Serie sind z.B. auf vielen AM2, aktuellen AM2+ und neuen AM3 Mainboards anzutreffen und bieten 8-Kanal High Definition Sound.
Das Treiberpaket hat dieses Mal neben den üblichen Customizations einen Fix für ein Blue Screen Problem unter Windows 2000 mit an Board.
Passend zum HD Audio-Codec Treiber gibt es den Realtek HDMI-Codec Treiber, welcher für den HDMI-Codec auf den ATI Radeon Karten mit HDMI-Ausgang notwendig ist, und den aktuellen High Definition Audio-Codec Treiber für Linux in der Version 5.14rc5.

AMD hat auch einen aktualisierten Hotfix Treiber für Grafikkarten mit der alten AGP Schnittstelle bereitgestellt. Nachdem die Khronos Group überraschend die Spezifikationen für OpenGL 4.0 und OpenGL 3.3 zur GDC 2010 veröffentlichte, stellt AMD jetzt einen ersten Preview Treiber bereit, der die beiden neuen Standards unterstützt. Der freie Multi-Messenger Miranda IM wurde in der neuen Version 0.8.19 veröffentlicht. Mit dem Programm lassen sich die Protokolle vieler Instant Messanger nutzen, natürlich auch gleichzeitig. Unterstützt werden u.a. AIM, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, Jabber, MSN und Yahoo, desweiteren ist ein IRC-Client integriert. Die Grundversion ist recht simpel gehalten, lässt sich aber durch Plugins aufhübschen und um weitere Funktionen ergänzen. Eine aktuelle deutsche Sprachdatei für das Programm gibt es hier.

Das Programm liefert alle erdenklichen Informationen über die CPU, desweiteren gibt es Informationen über Mainboard, Grafikkarte und RAM aus. Die integrierte Validierung ermöglicht es OC-Ergebnisse durch das Programm bestätigen zu lassen.
Bei Problemen mit CPUID-Produkten kann im offiziellen Forum (Link s. u.) direkt mit den Entwicklern kommuniziert werden, diese lassen einem auch schonmal eine speziell angepasste Beta-Version zukommen.

Seit der Veröffentlichung des ATI Catalyst 10.2 haben wir mehrfach über die neuen Feature und die versprochenen Performance-Steigerungen berichtet. Außerdem hatte AMD bereits am 17. März einen nicht WHQL zertifizierte ATI Catalyst 10.3a Preview als Vorschau auf den offiziellen Release bereitgestellt.
Vorallem Notebookbesitzer dürfen sich freuen! Ab dem Catalyst 10.3 werden auch die ATI Mobility Radeon Grafikkarten monatlich mit aktuellen Treibern direkt von AMD versorgt. Voraussetzung ist eine GPU der HD 2000er Serie oder neuer sowie als Betriebssystem Windows 7 oder Windows Vista. Windows XP wird nicht unterstützt. Nur drei OEMs unterstützten den Catalyst Mobility für Notebooks derzeit nicht. Dazu gehören Sony, Toshiba und Panasonic.
Im Gegensatz zum normalen Treiberpaket wird nicht gleich das gesamte Paket, sondern zunächst ein Tool heruntergeladen. Dieses Tool analysiert dann die vorhandene Hardware und lädt die entsprechenden Treiber von den AMD-Servern herunter. Dabei wird unter anderem geprüft, ob es sich um ein Notebook der oben genannten OEMs handelt. Außerdem unterstützt dieser Release keine Notebooks, die mit dem Feature "Switchable Graphics" ausgestattet sind. "Switchable Graphics" ermöglicht es zwischen einer Intel IGP und der diskreten ATI Mobility Radeon umzuschalten. Das Gegenstück auf der AMD Plattform nennt sich PowerXpress. Notebooks mit AMD IGP und diskreten ATI Mobility Radeon werden vom Catalyst 10.3 unterstützt.
Unigine Corp. hat rechtzeitig zum Start des Fermi eine neue Version des Heaven Benchmark, der auf der gleichnamigen Unigine Engine basiert, veröffentlicht. Der Benchmark läuft auf allen ATI Radeons ab der HD 2000 Serie und auf allen NVIDIA ab der GeForce 7000 Serie. Auf Windowsbetriebssystemen wird außerdem ein installiertes .NET framework 2.0 (oder neuer) benötigt. Damit das Tessellation -Feature genutzt werden kann, ist eine DirectX 11 Grafikkarte sowie Windows Vista oder Windows 7 als Bertriebssystem zwingende Vorraussetzung.
Das frei verfügbare und quelloffene unixoide Betriebssystem FreeBSD ist gestern in einer neuen finalen Version 7.3 erschienen. Das Release enthält neben einigen Bugfixes auch eine neue Version 13 des ZFS-Dateisystems, einen neuen Bootloader, einen amdsbwd(4) Treiber für AMD SB600/SB7xx watchdog timer, Cache-Optimierungen auf AMD64-CPUs, DRM-Support für Radeon HD 4200 und 4770 GPUs, sowie einige weitere Dinge. Der kostenlose Audio Player AIMP ist in der neuen Version 2.61 Build 560 verfügbar. Das Projekt des russischen Entwicklers Artyom Izmajlov orientiert sich stark an Winamp, kommt jedoch viel schlanker daher. AIMP kann zwar keine Videos abspielen, unterstützt jedoch die gängigsten Audio-Formate. Das Programm unterstützt viele Sprachen, u.a. Deutsch, und sollte diese bei der Installation erkennen. Mozilla hat seinen freien Browser Firefox in der Version 3.6.2 veröffentlicht. In der neuen Version wurden mehrere Sicherheitslücken geschlossen.
Besonders hervorgehoben wurde dabei eine Lücke, die von Evgeny Legerov entdeckt wurde. Durch sie lässt sich mit dem in Firefox 3.6 neu eingeführten WOFF-Format für Schriften ein Buffer-Overflow erzeugen, der einem Angreifer ermöglichen kann schadehaften Code auf einem System auszuführen.
Die neue Version ist auch schon über das automatische Update verfügbar.
Wer sich als Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus Nutzer derzeit beim Updaten über nicht erreichbare Server wundert, ist möglicherweise der starken Auslastung der non-Premium Serverzum Opfer gefallen. Verursacht wird dies durch die heutige Veröffentlichung der neuen Hauptversion 10 des kostenlosen Antivirenprogrammes.
Das Programm hat einen Facelift erhalten und soll nun befallene Dateien wesentlich besser reparieren können. Der freie Multi-Messenger Miranda IM wurde in der neuen Version 0.8.18 veröffentlicht. Mit dem Programm lassen sich die Protokolle vieler Instant Messanger nutzen, natürlich auch gleichzeitig. Das kostenlose Tag-Editor für Audio-Dateien Mp3tag ist in der Version 2.46 verfügbar. Mit dem Programm lassen sich bequem die Tags verschiedener Audio-Formate wie Mp3tag ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, iTunes MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments oder APE-Tags bearbeiten. Desweiteren lassen sich Playlists erstellen und kostenlose Online-Datenbanken wie freedb abfragen wo man auch gleich das passende Album-Cover mit herunterladen kann.
Neu in dieser Version sind u.a. eine Explorer Shell Erweiterung zur Einbindung in Kontextmenüs und die Drag'n'Drop-Funktion im Dialog für Tag-Quellen.

Das freie Simulationsspiel OpenTTD ist in der Version 1.0.0-RC3 verfügbar. Die Entwickler hoffen, dass dies der letzte Release Candidate ist und bald die finale Version 1.0.0 bereitgestellt werden kann.
Wer Mitte der 90er schon am PC gespielt hat, kennt sicher noch Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Die freie Implementierung namens OpenTTD macht es möglich sich diesen Klassiker wieder einmal anzuschauen. Bisher benötigte man dafür immer noch die Original-Grafiken und -Sounds, also auch eine Lizenz des Originals. Mittlerweile sind aber die Projekte OpenGFX und OpenSFX, welche für freie Grafiken und Sounds sorgen, so weit, dass man ohne die Originaldateien auskommen sollte. Für die letzte stable Version 0.7.5 benötigt man allerdings immer noch Dateien vom Original.
Weiterhin ist OpenTTD nicht nur ein einfacher Klon, sondern bringt auch viele Neuerungen mit. So gibt es einen integrierten Multiplayer-Modus, der IP-basierte Spiele mit bis zu 255 Teilnehmern zulässt und auch dedizierte Server unterstützt. Darüberhinaus sind zahlreiche Erweiterungen im Spiel vorhandener Objekte verfügbar. Ein interessantes Paket ist z.B. Infrastructure Sharing - damit lassen sich je nach Einstellung Bahnstrecken, Straßen und/oder Flughäfen durch andere Mitspieler gegen eine Gebühr benutzen.
Im Gegensatz zum Original läuft OpenTTD nicht nur unter DOS und Windows, sondern auch unter Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, OS/2 und auf weiteren Plattformen.

Mit der Version 1.1.19 ist nun die letzte Version der 1.1er-Generation der freien Internetsuite Seamonkey erschienen. Dabei wurden nocheinmal sechs, teils als krtisch eingestufte, Sicherheitslücken geschlossen. Gerade Nutzer älterer Betriebssystemversionen dürfte diese Aktualisierung freuen.
Seamonkey ist die Weiterentwicklung der Mozilla Application Suite und besteht aus den Komponenten Navigator, MailNews, Composer, Adressbuch, IRC-Client, Entwickler-Werkzeuge. Das von Mozilla unterstützte Projekt entstand nachdem Mozilla selbst die Entwicklung der kompletten Internetsuite aufgegeben hatte um sich mehr auf die Einzelanwendungen zu konzentrieren.

Der freie Multi-Messenger Miranda IM wurde in der neuen Version 0.8.17 veröffentlicht. Mit dem Programm lassen sich die Protokolle vieler Instant Messanger nutzen, natürlich auch gleichzeitig. Unterstützt werden u.a. AIM, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, Jabber, MSN und Yahoo, desweiteren ist ein IRC-Client integriert. Die Grundversion ist recht simpel gehalten, lässt sich aber durch Plugins aufhübschen und um weitere Funktionen ergänzen. Eine aktuelle deutsche Sprachdatei für das Programm gibt es hier.

Mit dem Catalyst 10.2 führte AMD eine Reihe neuer Features ein. Das wohl wichtigste ist die Herausnahme der Anwendungsprofile, zu denen auch die CrossFire Profile gehören, aus dem eigentlichen Treiber hinein in ein davon getrenntes .XML File. Dadurch ist es AMD möglich schneller Updates der Anwendungsprofile bereitzustellen, da man nicht mehr den gesamten Treiber zunächst von Microsoft WHQL zertifizieren lassen muss. In einem Interview ging Terry Makedon, Manager of Software Product Management, sogar soweit, dass er Updates der Profile noch am Veröffentlichungstag neuer Spiele versprach.
Heute liefert AMD das erste Update dieser "ATI CrossFireX Application Profile" aus. Darin sollen folgende Verbesserungen enthalten sein:

Realtek hat am 10. März neue Treiber für seine Netzwerkkarten-Chips der Baureihe RTL81xx veröffentlicht. Diese Chips sind auf vielen Mainboards und Netzwerkkarten verbaut und umfassen sowohl die 10/100 MBit (Fast Ethernet) als auch die 10/100/1000 MBit (Gigabit Ethernet) Schnittstellen für PCI und PCI-E. Über Änderungen gibt Realtek auch dieses Mal keine Auskunft.
Realtek hat mit der Version 2.44 ein neues Treiberpaket für seine High Definition Audio-Codecs veröffentlicht. HDA-Soundchips aus Realteks ALC88x Serie sind z.B. auf vielen AM2, aktuellen AM2+ und neuen AM3 Mainboards anzutreffen und bieten 8-Kanal High Definition Sound.

Das für Privatnutzer kostenlose Defragmentierungs-Programm Disk Defrag von Auslogics ist in der Version 3.1.3.100 erschienen. Mit dem Programm lassen sich Fat32 und NTFS Partitionen defragmentieren. Neben dem Setup ist auch eine Portable Version (allerdings nur in englisch) verfügbar. Die neue Version behebt einige Fehler und kommt mit einem verbesserten Installer und Interface daher.
Disk Defrag läuft unter Windows ab Windows XP bzw. Windows 2003, sowohl unter den 32Bit als auch unter den 64Bit Versionen.

AVG hat Anfang Oktober Version 9.0 seiner Anti-Virus Free Edition veröffentlicht. Wie der Name schon sagt ist das Programm kostenlos verfügbar und ohne Einschränkungen nutzbar. Die neue Version ist nun vollständig WIndows 7 kompatibel und soll beim Scannen nur noch ein Zehntel der Zeit benötigen. Desweiteren soll der Installationsprozess deutlich vereinfacht und das Design modernisiert worden sein, mehr dazu im Changelog. Die aktuelle Version 9.0.698 ist seit dem 21. Oktober verfügbar.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 läuft unter Windows ab Windows 2000, jedoch nicht auf den Server-Versionen.

Die BOINC-Software wurde für Windows in der Version 6.10.36 veröffentlicht. BOINC ist eine Clientsoftware für sehr viele Distributed Computing Projekte. Diese werden damit standardisiert unter einen Hut gebracht und können bequem über den BOINC-Manager gesteuert werden. Der neue Client hält viele Verbesserungen in Bezug auf CPU/GPU-Erkennung, Scheduling, Feature-Erkennung und Ergonomie/Bedienung bereit.

Das kostenlose Grafikkarten-Tool GPU Caps Viewer ist in der Version 1.8.4 verfügbar. Ähnlich wie GPU-Z und der Graphics-Tab von CPU-Z liest es Informationen über die Grafikkarte aus, zusätzlich lassen sich aber auch noch OpenGL-Demos abpielen und ein Stresstest durchführen. Der freie Multi-Messenger Miranda IM wurde in der neuen Version 0.8.16 veröffentlicht. Mit dem Programm lassen sich die Protokolle vieler Instant Messanger nutzen, natürlich auch gleichzeitig. Unterstützt werden u.a. AIM, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, Jabber, MSN und Yahoo, desweiteren ist ein IRC-Client integriert. Die Grundversion ist recht simpel gehalten, lässt sich aber durch Plugins aufhübschen und um weitere Funktionen ergänzen. Eine aktuelle deutsche Sprachdatei für das Programm gibt es hier.

Der freie (S)FTP/SCP-Client WinSCP ist in der Version 4.2.7 verfügbar. WinSCP ist ein grafischer Client für die Übertragung von Dateien im Internet/Netzwerk mittels der Dateitransferprotokolle FTP, SFTP und SCP. Die Verbindungen werden dabei verschlüsselt über Secure Shell (SSH-1/SSH-2) realisiert.

Opera Software hat seinem gleichnamigen, kostenlosen Browser in der Version 10.50 veröffentlicht. Die neue Version des Browsers bringt einige neue Funktionen mit sich, so integriert es sich besser in Windows 7 und hat die neue Carakan JavaScript engine an Board. Das neue "O" tab and menu ersetzt das alte Menü welches aber auf Wunsch wieder aktiviert werden kann. Die Presto 2.5 rendering engine verbessert die CSS2.1-, CSS3, HTML5 und SVG-Unterstützung im Zussamenspiel mit der Vega graphics library. Mit den neuen Widgets for Desktop soll eine neue Widget-Ära anbrechen in der man einige native Programme mit Widgets ersetzen kann. Weitere neue Funktionen betreffen Download acceleration software compatibility, Non-modal notification messages, Private browsing, Web Storage und Web SQL Database. Darüber hinaus wurden sehr viele Fehler behoben und einige kleinere Funktionen hinzugefügt (siehe Changelogs).
Opera läuft unter Windows ab Windows 98, Linux, FreeBSD und Solaris, ältere Versionen sind auch für andere Betriebssysteme verfügbar.
Das freie Simulationsspiel OpenTTD in der Version 1.0.0-RC2 verfügbar. Bis zum Erscheinen von Version 1.0.0 hat somit jetzt das Bugfixing Vorrang.
Wer Mitte der 90er schon am PC gespielt hat, kennt sicher noch Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Die freie Implementierung namens OpenTTD macht es möglich sich diesen Klassiker wieder einmal anzuschauen. Bisher benötigte man dafür immer noch die Original-Grafiken und -Sounds, also auch eine Lizenz des Originals. Mittlerweile sind aber die Projekte OpenGFX und OpenSFX, welche für freie Grafiken und Sounds sorgen, so weit, dass man ohne die Originaldateien auskommen sollte. Für die letzte stable Version 0.7.5 benötigt man allerdings immer noch Dateien vom Original.
Weiterhin ist OpenTTD nicht nur ein einfacher Klon, sondern bringt auch viele Neuerungen mit. So gibt es einen integrierten Multiplayer-Modus, der IP-basierte Spiele mit bis zu 255 Teilnehmern zulässt und auch dedizierte Server unterstützt. Darüberhinaus sind zahlreiche Erweiterungen im Spiel vorhandener Objekte verfügbar. Ein interessantes Paket ist z.B. Infrastructure Sharing - damit lassen sich je nach Einstellung Bahnstrecken, Straßen und/oder Flughäfen durch andere Mitspieler gegen eine Gebühr benutzen.
Im Gegensatz zum Original läuft OpenTTD nicht nur unter DOS und Windows, sondern auch unter Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, OS/2 und auf weiteren Plattformen.

Der für Privatpersonen kostenlose Bildbetrachter XnView ist in der Version 1.97.2 verfügbar. Das Programm erlaubt ein komfortables Betrachten und Konvertieren von über 400 Grafikformaten, desweiteren ist die Bearbeitung mittels verschiedener Filter, Farbraummanipulationen und das Abspielen von Diashows möglich.
XnView läuft unter Windows ab Windows 95, für Windows 3.x ist eine ältere Version erhältlich. Auch für andere Betriebssysteme wie MacOS X, Linux, Solaris und BSD sind ältere Versionen verfügbar.
Unter Windows ist XnView für die private Nutzung kostenlos ohne Registrierung nutzbar, unter Linux und OpenBSD ist auch die gewerbliche Nutzung kostenlos.
