Nachdem die Nero AG erst vor wenigen Tagen das Nero 7 Premium Software-Pakete auf die Version 7.2.0.3 aktualisiert hat (wir berichteten), wurde nun ein weiteres Update auf die Version 7.2.0.3b zum Download bereitgestellt.
Mangels Changelog lässt sich leider nicht feststellen, was sich nun kurzfristig mit dem neuen Update 7.2.0.3b gegenüber der Version 7.2.0.3 geändert hat.
Update (28.04.2006): Ein Changelog liegt zwar wie üblich bisher noch nicht vor, allerdings hat die Nero AG zur neuen Version 7.2.0.3/b aufgrund vieler Neuerungen und Verbesserungen eigens eine allerdings englischsprachige Pressemitteilung veröffentlicht.

Für das Nero 7 Premium Software-Paket der Nero AG (vormals Ahead Software) ist ein Update auf die Version 7.2.0.3 erschienen. Das deutschsprachige Updatepaket (ohne Yahoo-Toolbar) ist erneut über 100 MB groß.
Über Verbessungen ist - wie leider bei Nero in letzter Zeit üblich - nichts zu erfahren. Man darf jedoch davon ausgehen, dass einige neue Brenner in der Liste der unterstützten Geräte dazu gekommen sind und einige kleinere Bugs gefixt wurden.
Nach Veröffentlichung der Version 1.5 des OpenSource E-Mail Clients Thunderbird im Januar diesen Jahres (wir berichteten), wurde nun mit der Version 1.5.0.2 das erste große Bugfix-Release zum Download bereit gestellt. Neben allgemeinen Fehlerkorrekturen und Verbesserungen in Sachen Stabilität werden mit der neuen Version einige kritische Sicherheitslücken beseitigt. Die Thunderbird Entwickler empfehlen daher allen Anwendern ein Update auf diese neue Version.

Für die Realtek High Definition Audio-Codecs, wie zum Beispiel den ALC880 wurde vor kurzem eine neue Treiberversion veröffentlicht. Der ALC880-Soundchip ist auf vielen aktuellen Sockel 939 Mainboards anzutreffen und bietet 8-Kanal-High Definition-Sound.
Momentan hat man bei Realtek die Versionshistory noch nicht aktualisiert, jedoch wird dies sicherlich in kürze nachgeholt.

LG3D-LiveCD 2.4-test1
LG3D-LiveCD 2.4-test1 basiert auf Slax 5.1.0 (früher Slackware) und verwendet das Sun Microsystem Projekt Looking Glass - eine auf Java basierende Technik, die genutzt wird, um eine Desktopoberfläche mit 3D-Elementen zu schaffen. Das aktuelle Testrelease kann aber unter Umständen mit Grafikkarten von NVIDIA Probleme verursachen.

SuperGamer-1 livedvd
Spielen unter Linux ist nicht? Die SuperGamer-1 livedvd will das Gegenteil beweisen und kommt zum Beispiel mit den folgenden 3D-Games (teilweise Demos) daher: America's Army, Cube, Doom 3, Enemy Territory, Legends, Nexuiz, Privateer, Quake 4, Soldier of Fortune, Ufo: Alien Invasion, UT2004 und Wesnoth daher.
Die Live-DVD basiert auf PCLinuxOS (das wiederum auf Mandrake Linux) und kann momentan nur per Bittorrent geladen werden. Ein englischsprachiges Review der DVD mit zahlreichen Screenshots und einer Liste weiterer Spiele gibt es bei tuxmachines.org. Ein Supportforum gibt es hier.
Neue Opera Beta, neue Firefox Version und der Internet Explorer Gewohnheitsnutzer wartet weiterhin auf den Internet Explorer 7? Nach einigen Preview- (wir berichteten) und regelmäßigen wöchentlich veröffentlichen Vorab-Versionen hat der norwegische Entwickler Opera Software nun die erste offizielle Beta-Version des neuen alternativen Webbrowsers Opera 9 veröffentlicht. Die umfangreichen Release Notes (Windows-Version) dokumentieren alle Änderungen, Verbesserungen und Fehlerkorrekturen seit der letzten offiziellen finalen Version 8.54. Opera wird seit September 2005 werbe- und lizenzfrei angeboten (wir berichteten).

Nachdem vor wenigen Wochen die erste Beta der nächsten WinRAR Version 3.60 veröffentlich wurde, ist nun seit kurzem die zweite Beta-Version verfügbar, bei der einige kleinere Probleme behoben wurden.
Mit der Version 3.60 bietet WinRAR erstmals eine Unterstützung für Dual-Core CPUs wie z.B. AMDs Athlon 64 X2.

Multithreaded version of RAR compression algorithm improves the compression speed on computers with several CPU, dual core CPU and processors with hyperthreading technology. Multithreading is enabled by default, but you can disable it in "General" part of "Settings" dialog. In the command line mode you can control multithreading with -mt switch.
WinRAR can display the folder tree panel allowing to navigate in disk and archive folders. Use "Options/Folder tree" submenu to enable the folder tree. It can be configured separately in file and archive management modes.Folder tree replaces "Browse for folder" command previously available in "File" menu and uses its Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut.
Now WinRAR "Rename" command also works with ZIP archives. Previous versions could rename files only in RAR archives.
Added decompression of LZH archives created with "-lh7-" algorithm.
New "Remove duplicate folders from extraction path" option in "Settings/Compression" dialog.If this option is on and you unpack an archive which root folder has no files and only one 'somename' folder and if destination folder is new or empty and also ends with '/somename', WinRAR will exclude one 'somename' from resulting 'somename/somename' path.
New "Define volume sizes..." button in "Settings/Compression". This button activates "Define volume sizes" dialog. Here you can customize the list of predefined volume sizes associated with "Split to volumes, bytes" field in archiving dialog.
Speed of RAR general compression increased for some data types. Depending on data type and size the gain may achieve 5 - 15%.
New "Rename automatically" option in the extraction dialog and command line -or switch to rename extracted files automatically if file with the same name already exists. You can also enable the auto-renaming mode directly from the overwrite confirmation prompt with "Rename All" button.Renamed files will get names like 'filename(N).txt', where 'filename.txt' is the original file name and 'N' is a number.
"Set modification time" option in "Advanced" part of extraction dialog is accessible also for ZIP archives. Previously it could be changed only for RAR archives.
"Multithreading" option added to "Benchmark and hardware test" command, so you can compare performance of usual and multithreaded versions of RAR compression algorithm.
New 'ch' (change archive parameters) command line mode command. Its purpose is to apply switches like -av, -tl and -cl to archive.
New 'cv' command line mode command. It provides the command line interface to WinRAR "Convert archives" command. It is supported only by winrar.exe, not by rar.exe.
New command line -sl and -sm switches to set size limits of processing files.
New command line -fcu[file] switch allows to read archive comments from Unicode files. It also modifies behavior of "cw" command, setting the comment output format to Unicode.
7Z added to list of formats stored without compression when using -ms switch without a parameter.
Switch -e[+] is now supported by most of command line operations including extracting and deleting files. Previously it was supported by only archiving command.
It is allowed to use environment variables in archive name in archiving dialog, in destination path in extraction dialog, in folder names on "Compression" and "Paths" pages in WinRAR settings. For example, you can enter '%temp%' in "Folder for temporary files" field.

Seit Veröffentlichung der Version 2.0 wurden nun innerhalb kurzer Zeit zahlreiche kleinere Updates veröffentlicht, bei denen es sich im wesentlichen um Fehlerkorrekturen handelte.
Für sehr kontroverse Diskussionen sorgte zuletzt die Ankündigung der Skype-Entwickler, bestimmte Features des neuen 2.0 Clients ausschließlich Nutzern mit Intel Dual-Core CPUs zugänglich zu machen (wir berichteten).
Für die Realtek Audio-Codecs - unter anderem den ALC650, wie er auf vielen nForce2-Mainboards verbaut ist oder den ALC850 für viele aktuelle Athlon 64 Boards - ist ein neuer Treiber erschienen.
Zudem hat Realtek ebenfalls ein neues Treiberpaket für die High Definition (HD-)Audio Codecs veröffentlicht (Realtek ALC88x).

Nachdem die Entwicklung der Mozilla Websuite im letzten Jahr zugunsten der Einzel-Anwendungen Firefox und Thunderbird eingestellt wurde, fand sich ein unabhängiges Entwickler-Team zusammen, das das Projekt auf Basis der letzten Mozilla Version 1.8 Beta und mit Untersützung der Mozilla Foundation nun als SeaMonkey Websuite weiterentwickelt (wir berichteten).
The SeaMonkey name was adopted by the project leading group (dubbed "SeaMonkey Council") after considering a long list of community-proposed names - it was decided that the long-lived internal code name still suited the project best. It was no easy decision, but it has a certain appeal - the suite is already known by SeaMonkey within the developer community. The council is working on having this name trademarked with the help of the Mozilla Foundation.
While the Foundation doesn't consider the new SeaMonkey application to be an officially supported upgrade path for Mozilla suite users, it provides the newly founded project with assistance in the form of much-needed project infrastructure, and cooperates with SeaMonkey developers. Development of SeaMonkey produces many improvements which are contributed back to the Mozilla codebase, much of which is shared with products including Firefox and Thunderbird.

(Linux) Fedora Core 5 users using SELinux in enforcing mode will experience security permissions problems when using the GTK1 build. Use the GTK2 build instead (recommended), or see this page for more information.
Vier Monate ist die letzte Version alt, nun hat die Fima DivX Incorporated den Videocodec DivX auf Version 6.2 aktualisiert. Wessen System Multi-Core, SMP und/oder Hyperthreading unterstützt, soll von dramatischen Geschwindigkeitssteigerungen profitieren. Ein Geschwindigkeitszuwachs gegenüber DivX 6.0 von bis zu 350% wird versprochen. Aber auch Besitzer herkömmlicher System mit nur einer CPU dürfen sich über deutliche Geschwindigkeitszuwächse freuen.
Wie stark die Leistungssteigerungen gegenüber der Version 6.1 ausfallen, wird leider nicht erwähnt. Denn schon damals (wir berichteten ) leistete DivX 6.1 unter bestimmten Bedingungen 300% des Vorgängercodecs.
Wer anlässlich des fünften Geburtstages von DivX eine kostenlose Lizenz ergattern konnte ist fein raus, denn auch mit diesen Lizenzschlüsseln ist ein Update möglich. Allerdings sollte man bei der Installation etwas Vorsicht walten lassen. Die Standardinstallation möchte Google Desktop installieren, so man es nicht explizit abwählt.
Und noch etwas Interessantes: Mittels des "DivX Web Player" ist es möglich DivX-Videos als Stream auf Internetseiten einzubinden. Der Besucher kann dann das Video direkt auf der Seite anschauen ohne es herunterladen zu müssen. Das Beste daran: Wer den DivX Web Player Code Generator nutzt und DivX per Email einen Link auf seine Seite mit dem dort eingearbeiteten Video zukommen läßt, dem wird eine kostenlose Seriennummer (also eine Lizenz) für DivX 6 Create im Wert von $19,99 versprochen. ATI hat sein CATALYST Treiberpaket in der Version 6.4 freigegeben. Voraussetzung für das CATALYST Control Center (CCC*) ist ein installiertes Microsoft .NET Framework. Eine aktuelle Version des .NET Framework kann man über die Microsoft Windows Update Seite beziehen. Hinweise zu den Release Notes für den Windows 2000/XP Treiber finden sich im Kommentar-Bereich.
Zudem hat ATI neue Linux-Treiber in der Version 8.24.8 veröffentlicht.

ASUSTeK hat in den letzten Tagen die neuste Version des "ASUS LiveUpdate Tool" in der Version 7.05.01 veröffentlicht.
Mit Hilfe dieses speziellen Programms ist es den Besitzern verschiedenster ASUS-Mainboards möglich, Ihr Mainboard direkt in Windows mit einem neuen BIOS zu versorgen und so immer auf dem aktuellsten Stand zu bleiben. Dabei gibt ASUS neun Grundregeln für das sichere BIOS-Update an:

Noch vor Veröffentlichung der 6.4 April-Version des regulären, monatlich erscheinenden Catalyst Treiberpaketes hat ATI einen Beta-Hotfix für das PC-Spiel "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" auf Basis des Catalyst 6.3 bereitgestellt.
Der Hotfix soll den Umstand beseitigen, dass es bisher nicht möglich war, High Dynamic Lighting (HDR) und Anti-Aliasing (AA) gleichzeitig zu nutzen. Zudem wird der AFR-Modus (Alternate Frame Rendering) im Crossfire-Betrieb freigeschaltet. Der Hotfix ist an ATI-Grafikkarten der X1000-Serie adressiert.
Weder ATI selbst, noch 2K games oder Bethesda bieten für diesen Beta-Treiber Support.

This special driver is provided to enable additional functionality for Oblivion. Specifically this driver will:
Permit High Dynamic Lighting (HDR) concurrently with Anti-Aliasing (AA)
AFR mode for CrossFire (2 GPU’s)
This driver is provided as a proof-of-concept and is not supported by Bethesda, 2K games or ATI Technologies.
Known issues:
SuperAA with CrossFire in HDR mode is not enabled. If you have SupperAA enabled you will get the quality and performance of one card as opposed to two.
Rendering issues with grass shadows
On an ATI Radeon X1600XT CrossFire configuration, the game may intermittently crash if they set resolution is higher than 1600x1200
On an ATI Radeon X1900 series card, the game may crash while task-switching between the desktop and game (alt-tab).
ATI Engineering is currently investigating these issues. Updates will be posted as they become available.

Supported VIA Chips and Microsoft Windows Operating systems
The VIA PATA/SATA IDE Driver Package supports VIA PATA and SATA controllers as detailed below.
1. VIA PATA IDE Controllers
South Bridges supported: All VIA South Bridge chips are supported, including VT686A, VT686B, VT8235, VT8237, VT8237R Plus, VT8237R, VT8251, VT8237A, CX700,VX700. Systems supported: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server2003, Windows XP 64-Bit and Windows Server 2003 x64. Windows Vista, it will be supported after V1.50a.
Notes on legacy operating systems: The old VIA Miniport driver v3.20 is included in this package to support the VIA VT686A/VT686B/VT8235 South Bridges under NT4.0, Windows 98SE, Windows ME. All other VIA South Bridges with legacy operating systems should use the Microsoft Default IDE driver.
2. VIA SATA IDE Controllers
VIA SATA controllers supported: All VIA SATA controllers inside VIA South Bridge chips are supported including:
SATA controller inside VT8237/VT8237R Plus/VT8237R.
SATA controller inside VT8251
SATA controller inside VT8237A
SATA controller inside VX700/CX700
Operating Systems supported: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server2003, Windows XP 64-Bit and Windows Server 2003 x64. Windows Vista will be supported after V1.50a. Notes on legacy operating systems: This driver does not supported VIA SATA controllers for Windows NT4.0, Windows 98SE, Windows ME. (This is due to a limitation in the operating system driver structure, where SATA can only be supported in native IDE mode).
Benefits: End-users can enjoy the benefits of the SATA Hot-Plug feature, where a SATA drive can be hot-plugged, detected and used much in the same way as a USB hard drive. This feature is supported under Windows 2000 and later operating systems.
Limitations The default Microsoft driver is used as part of this driver package. The default Microsoft driver does not support the Port-Multiplier feature. To overcome this, VIA is working on providing this support via the VIA IDE Accelerator driver. Users with legacy operating systems (Windows NT4.0, Windows 98SE, Windows ME ) need to set their SATA controller to RAID mode in their BIOS and then use VIA V-RAID driver package.

A new version of the VIA HyperionPro driver package has been released, which includes the new VIA PATA/SATA IDE Driver package, also just released today. Über zweieinhalb Jahre nach Erscheinen der letzten Version 5.7 hat Heidi Computers nach langer Zeit nun Eraser in der Version 5.8 veröffentlicht, die folgende Änderungern beinhaltet.

Für den Marvell "Yukon" Gigabit-Netzwerkcontroller, der auf vielen Athlon 64 Mainboards verbaut ist, wurde vor kurzem ein neuer Treiber veröffentlicht. Die Treiber in der Version 8.51.5.3 sind für die Microsoft Betriebssysteme Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server 32-Bit und Windows XP 32-Bit erhältlich.
Seit heute ist die neuste Beta-Version des Packprogramms WinRAR auf der Herstellerseite von RARLAB erhältlich. Die Version 3.60 beta1 lohnt sich vor allem für Benutzer mit einem Dual-Core-Prozessor, wie beispielsweise dem AMD Athlon 64 X2, da RARLAB erstmalig eine Dual-Core-Unterstütztung in das beliebte Packprogramm implementiert hat.
Doch nicht nur der Dual-Core-Support rechtfertigt den Versionssprung von 3.51 auf 3.60, sondern auch viele weitere Änderungen sind in der aktuellen Changelog einzusehen:
WinRAR - What's new in the latest version (3.60 beta 1)
Multithreaded version of RAR compression algorithm improves the compression speed on computers with several CPU, dual core CPU and processors with hyperthreading technology. Multithreading is enabled by default, but you can disable it in "General" part of "Settings" dialog.
In the command line mode you can control multithreading with -mt switch.
WinRAR can display the folder tree panel allowing to navigate in disk and archive folders. Use "Options/Folder tree" submenu to enable the folder tree. It can be configured separately in file and archive management modes.
Folder tree replaces "Browse for folder" command previously available in "File" menu and uses its Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut.
Now WinRAR "Rename" command also works with ZIP archives. Previous versions could rename files only in RAR archives.
Added decompression of LZH archives created with "-lh7-" algorithm.
New "Remove duplicate folders from extraction path" option in "Settings/Compression" dialog.
If this option is on and you unpack an archive which root folder has no files and only one 'somename' folder and if destination folder is new or empty and also ends with '/somename', WinRAR will exclude one 'somename' from resulting 'somename/somename' path.
New "Define volume sizes..." button in "Settings/Compression". This button activates "Define volume sizes" dialog. Here you can customize the list of predefined volume sizes associated with "Split to volumes, bytes" field in archiving dialog.
Speed of RAR general compression increased for some data types. Depending on data type and size the gain may achieve 5 - 15%.
New "Rename automatically" option in the extraction dialog and command line -or switch to rename extracted files automatically if file with the same name already exists. You can also enable the auto-renaming mode directly from the overwrite confirmation prompt with "Rename All" button.
Renamed files will get names like 'filename(N).txt', where 'filename.txt' is the original file name and 'N' is a number.
"Set modification time" option in "Advanced" part of extraction dialog is accessible also for ZIP archives. Previously it could be changed only for RAR archives.
"Multithreading" option added to "Benchmark and hardware test" command, so you can compare performance of usual and multithreaded versions of RAR compression algorithm.
New 'ch' (change archive parameters) command line mode command. Its purpose is to apply switches like -av, -tl and -cl to archive.
New 'cv' command line mode command. It provides the command line interface to WinRAR "Convert archives" command. It is supported only by winrar.exe, not by rar.exe.
New command line -sl and -sm switches to set size limits of processing files.
New command line -fcu[file] switch allows to read archive comments from Unicode files. It also modifies behavior of "cw" command, setting the comment output format to Unicode.
7Z added to list of formats stored without compression when using -ms switch without a parameter.
Switch -e[+] is now supported by most of command line operations including extracting and deleting files. Previously it was supported by only archiving command.
It is allowed to use environment variables in archive name in archiving dialog, in destination path in extraction dialog, in folder names on "Compression" and "Paths" pages in WinRAR settings. For example, you can enter '%temp%' in "Folder for temporary files" field.
