Nach Veröffentlichung der lange erwarteten finalen Version 2.0 im Oktober 2005 (wir berichteten) ist nun mit der Version 2.0.3 das dritte Bugfix-Release des Open-Source Office-Paketes "OpenOffice" erschienen, das vor allem Fehler beseitigt und einige Sicherheitslücken schließt. OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 is recommended for all. Enhancements include:

We also recommend OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 because it includes important security fixes. These have not been exploited but all users of any prior version of OpenOffice.org are urged to download 2.0.3. A standalone patch will be available soon.

Mit dem Internet Explorer 7, der integraler Bestandteil des kommenden Windows Vista sein, aber auch für Windows XP veröffentlicht wird, bemüht sich Microsoft, den immer größer werden Rückstand zu Konkurrenz-Produkten wie Opera oder Mozillas Firefox aufzuholen, vor allem in Hinblick auf Sicherheitsmerkmale wie auch Funktionsumfang. Speziell Firefox konnte gegenüber dem allerdings nachwievor dominierenden Internet Explorer in letzter Zeit immer wieder Marktanteile hinzugewinnen.
Microsoft hat beim IE7 die Benutzeroberfläche vollständig überarbeitet, der Browser unterstützt nun u.a. das von der Konkurrenz und diversen IE-Browseraufsätzen bekannte Tabbed Browsing, RSS Feeds, eine frei konfigurierbare Suchleiste und verfügt über einen integrierten Phishing-Schutz. Eine Übersicht der diversen Neuerungen führt Microsoft in einer Feature-Liste auf.
Zudem hat Microsoft eine Webseite eingerichtetet, die verschiedene Erweiterungen für den IE7 bereithält.
Nun hat Microsoft die dritte offizielle Beta-Version des Internet Explorer 7 veröffentlicht, vorerst ausschließlich in englischer Sprache. Lokalisierte Versionen sollen in nächster Zeit folgen.

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 for Windows XP (and more) Now Available
This morning we released IE7 Beta 3 for Windows XP. This version includes improvements in reliability, compatibility, security, and a few end user features. Give it a try at [url]http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx[/url].
Based on your feedback, we’ve made some changes to IE7. Beta 3 returns the email button to the toolbar customize dialog (one of the most requested features), and enables reordering of tabs by dragging them to the left or right. In this version you can also scroll horizontally while zooming. To improve the RSS experience, IE7 now allows you to update all your RSS feeds on-demand as well as mark them all “READ”.
Beta 3 also contains all the security fixes addressed in the June IE security bulletin, so we encourage all Beta 2 users to upgrade to Beta 3.
Please remember to uninstall any previous IE7 builds before installing this one. IE7 Beta 3 runs on Windows XP SP2, Windows XP x64, and Windows Server 2003 SP1. This beta does not install on Windows Vista Beta 2; a new version of IE7+ in Windows Vista will be available with the next public Windows Vista release soon. IE7 still replaces IE6; if you’re a developer and need to have both IE6 and IE7 on a single machine, I recommend Microsoft Virtual PC (here’s a link to their 45-day free trial version) or Chris Wilson’s post on the subject.

EVEREST ist der inoffizielle Nachfolger des System-Analyse-Tools Aida32, dessen Entwicklung im August 2004 eingestellt wurde (wir berichteten). EVEREST wird inzwischen nur noch als kommerzielle und kostenpflichtige Ultimate- oder Corporate-Edition angeboten. Die Entwicklung und den Vertrieb der kostenlosen Home-Edition hat Lavalys im Dezember 2005 eingestellt.
Bei den Downloads handelt es sich um zeitlich begrenzte und im Funktionsumfang eingeschränkte Testversionen.
ATI hat sein CATALYST Grafikkarten-Treiberpaket in der Version 6.6 zum Download freigegeben. Voraussetzung für das CATALYST Control Center (CCC*) ist ein installiertes Microsoft .NET Framework. Eine aktuelle Version des .NET Framework kann man über die Microsoft Windows Update Seite beziehen. Hinweise zu den Release Notes für den Windows 2000/XP Treiber finden sich im Kommentar-Bereich.

Über Verbessungen ist - wie leider bei Nero in letzter Zeit üblich - nichts zu erfahren. Man darf jedoch davon ausgehen, dass einige neue Brenner in der Liste der unterstützten Geräte dazu gekommen sind und einige kleinere Bugs gefixt wurden.
Nach geraumer Zeit (Dezember 2005) hat NVIDIA für seine Chipsätze mit integrierter Grafik, wie sie auf vielen Lowcost Integratorenboards im µATX Format eingesetzt werden, einen neuen Chipsatztreiber geschnürt. Folgende Komponenten kommen zum Einsatz:
Realtek hat mit der Version 1.40 ein neues Treiberpaket für die High Definition Audio-Codecs der ALC8xx und ALC26x Serie veröffentlicht. Der ALC880-Soundchip z.B. ist auf vielen aktuellen Sockel 939 Mainboards anzutreffen und bietet 8-Kanal High Definition Sound.

Nach diversen Preview- (wir berichteten) und Beta-Versionen hat der norwegische Entwickler Opera Software nun die finale Version des neuen alternativen Webbrowser Opera 9 veröffentlicht. Nachdem Anfang April die erste Beta der nächsten WinRAR Version 3.60 veröffentlich wurde, ist nun seit kurzem die fünfte Beta-Version verfügbar, bei der einige kleinere Probleme behoben wurden.
Mit der Version 3.60 bietet WinRAR erstmals eine Unterstützung für Dual-Core CPUs wie z.B. AMDs Athlon 64 X2.

Multithreaded version of RAR compression algorithm improves the compression speed on computers with several CPU, dual core CPU and processors with hyperthreading technology. Multithreading is enabled by default, but you can disable it in "General" part of "Settings" dialog. In the command line mode you can control multithreading with -mt switch.
WinRAR can display the folder tree panel allowing to navigate in disk and archive folders. Use "Options/Folder tree" submenu to enable the folder tree. It can be configured separately in file and archive management modes.Folder tree replaces "Browse for folder" command previously available in "File" menu and uses its Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut.
Now WinRAR "Rename" command also works with ZIP archives. Previous versions could rename files only in RAR archives.
Added decompression of LZH archives created with "-lh7-" algorithm.
New "Remove duplicate folders from extraction path" option in "Settings/Compression" dialog.If this option is on and you unpack an archive which root folder has no files and only one 'somename' folder and if destination folder is new or empty and also ends with '/somename', WinRAR will exclude one 'somename' from resulting 'somename/somename' path.
New "Define volume sizes..." button in "Settings/Compression". This button activates "Define volume sizes" dialog. Here you can customize the list of predefined volume sizes associated with "Split to volumes, bytes" field in archiving dialog.
Speed of RAR general compression increased for some data types. Depending on data type and size the gain may achieve 5 - 15%.
New "Rename automatically" option in the extraction dialog and command line -or switch to rename extracted files automatically if file with the same name already exists. You can also enable the auto-renaming mode directly from the overwrite confirmation prompt with "Rename All" button.Renamed files will get names like 'filename(N).txt', where 'filename.txt' is the original file name and 'N' is a number.
"Set modification time" option in "Advanced" part of extraction dialog is accessible also for ZIP archives. Previously it could be changed only for RAR archives.
"Multithreading" option added to "Benchmark and hardware test" command, so you can compare performance of usual and multithreaded versions of RAR compression algorithm.
New 'ch' (change archive parameters) command line mode command. Its purpose is to apply switches like -av, -tl and -cl to archive.
New 'cv' command line mode command. It provides the command line interface to WinRAR "Convert archives" command. It is supported only by winrar.exe, not by rar.exe.
New command line -sl and -sm switches to set size limits of processing files.
New command line -fcu[file] switch allows to read archive comments from Unicode files. It also modifies behavior of "cw" command, setting the comment output format to Unicode.
7Z added to list of formats stored without compression when using -ms switch without a parameter.
Switch -e[+] is now supported by most of command line operations including extracting and deleting files. Previously it was supported by only archiving command.
It is allowed to use environment variables in archive name in archiving dialog, in destination path in extraction dialog, in folder names on "Compression" and "Paths" pages in WinRAR settings. For example, you can enter '%temp%' in "Folder for temporary files" field.

Nachdem Microsoft am letzten Donnerstag den Windows XP Nachfolger, Windows Vista, in der Public Beta 2 veröffentlicht hat (wir berichteten), sind kürzlich erste Updates aufgetaucht.
Das Update bezieht sich in diesem Fall jedoch nicht allein auf Windows Vista, sondern soll auch für, das ebenfalls am Donnerstag veröffentlichte, Windows Longhorn Server genutzt werden.
Wirklich klar, was das Update macht ist noch nicht und Microsoft hat bisher auch nur soviel verraten, dass das Update einen Konflikt mit Symantecs Antivirus 10.0.1.622 beheben soll. Wie sich dieser Fehler bemerkbar macht ist ebenfalls noch unklar. Des Weiteren ist auch noch nicht der Knowledgebase-Eintrag in der Microsoft Datenbank erreichbar, was darauf hindeutet, dass das Update recht schnell entwickelt werden musste und kaum Zeit war.
Der nur 344kb große Patch ist im Microsoft Download-Center bereitgestellt.

Die beliebte Linux-Distribution Ubuntu, welche wir in der ersten Ausgabe des Linux-RoundUps unter die Lupe genommen haben, ist nun am 1.6. in der neusten Auflage 6.06 LTS als offizielle Final erschienen.
Dieses Release trägt erstmalig zusätzlich zum internen Codenamen "Dapper Drake" das Kürzel LTS im Namen, was für Long-Term-Support steht und Anwendern gleich im Versionsnamen Professionalität in Form eines dreijährigen Supports (5 Jahre für den Server) vermitteln soll.
Gleichzeitig sind sowohl die Ubuntu-Derivate Kubuntu, Edubuntu und Xubuntu in der Version 6.06 erschienen, sowie die auf Ubuntu basierende Server-Variante Ubuntu Server. Die Distributionen stehen für die drei Architekturen Intel x86, AMD64, und PowerPC zur Verfügung und können über die offiziellen Mirrorlisten heruntergeladen werden.

Nachdem die Entwicklung der Mozilla Websuite im letzten Jahr zugunsten der Einzel-Anwendungen Firefox und Thunderbird eingestellt wurde, fand sich ein unabhängiges Entwickler-Team zusammen, das das Projekt auf Basis der letzten Mozilla Version 1.8 Beta und mit Untersützung der Mozilla Foundation nun als SeaMonkey Websuite weiterentwickelt (wir berichteten).
The SeaMonkey name was adopted by the project leading group (dubbed "SeaMonkey Council") after considering a long list of community-proposed names - it was decided that the long-lived internal code name still suited the project best. It was no easy decision, but it has a certain appeal - the suite is already known by SeaMonkey within the developer community. The council is working on having this name trademarked with the help of the Mozilla Foundation.
While the Foundation doesn't consider the new SeaMonkey application to be an officially supported upgrade path for Mozilla suite users, it provides the newly founded project with assistance in the form of much-needed project infrastructure, and cooperates with SeaMonkey developers. Development of SeaMonkey produces many improvements which are contributed back to the Mozilla codebase, much of which is shared with products including Firefox and Thunderbird.

Nach Veröffentlichung der Version 1.5 des OpenSource E-Mail Clients Thunderbird im Januar diesen Jahres (wir berichteten), wurde nun mit der Version 1.5.0.4 das zweite große Bugfix-Release zum Download bereit gestellt. Neben allgemeinen Fehlerkorrekturen und Verbesserungen in Sachen Stabilität werden mit der neuen Version auch einige Sicherheitslücken beseitigt. Die Thunderbird Entwickler empfehlen daher allen Anwendern ein Update auf diese neue Version.
Mit dieser neuen Version gibt es nun für den Mac eine "Universal Binary", die sowohl für PowerPC- als auch Intel-basierte Systeme geeignet ist.

Nach Veröffentlichung der Version 1.5 des OpenSource Webbrowsers Firefox im November des letzten Jahres (wir berichteten) wurde nun die finale Version 1.5.0.4 zum Download bereit gestellt. Die neue Version stellt dabei die inzwischen vierte Fehlerbereinigung und Überarbeitung des derzeitigen "Stable"-Pfades 1.5 dar. Seit Firefox 1.5.0.2 bieten die Mozilla Entwickler auch eine "Universal Binary" für Macs an, die sowohl für PowerPC- als auch Intel-basierte Systeme geeignet ist.
Zudem wurde vor wenigen Tagen eine neue Alpha-Version des nächsten Firefox Major-Releases 2.0 "Bon Echo" veröffentlicht. Über die diversen Neuerungen berichteten wir bereits bei Veröffentlichung der ersten "Bon Echo" Alpha-Version.
Creative Labs hat ein neues Treiber-Paket für Soundblaster X-Fi veröffentlicht. Bei dem Treiber handelt es sich um eine offizielle Beta-Version.
Creative Labs X-Fi Serie war zuletzt aufgrund nachwievor vorhandener Probleme in den Schlagzeilen, die sich offenbar vor allem in Verbindung mit NVIDIAs nForce Chipsätzen bemerkbar machen (wir berichteten). Der nun bereitgestellte Beta-Treiber adressiert laut den Release Notes ausdrücklich nicht generell die Ursache für die sogenannten "crackling"-Probleme, also Geräuschartefakte wie "knistern" oder "knacksen", sondern behebt allenfalls einige spezifische Probleme.
Zudem ist der Treiber zeitlich auf eine Nutzungsdauer von 120 Tagen begrenzt.
