Nachdem in der letzten Woche bereits zwei Release Candidates angeboten wurden, hat es Mozilla nun doch noch geschafft, die finale Version des Firefox 3.5 im zweiten Quartal zu veröffentlichen, die auch bereits für ältere Versionen per Auto-Update verfügbar ist.
Nach Angaben von Mozilla soll die neue Version vor allem durch eine verbesserte Geschwindigkeit punkten und weniger Speicher verbrauchen.
"Firefox 3.5 enthält die TraceMonkey-JavaScript-Engine, die dem Browser dramatische Geschwindigkeitsverbesserungen im Vergleich zu vorher beschert. Das ist der schnellste Firefox, den es je gab (mehr als doppelt so schnell wie Firefox 3 und zehnmal schneller als Firefox 2)."
Hinzu kommen neue Features wie der Private Modus, sowie unter anderem Verbesserungen beim Phishing- & Malware-Schutz, bei der Intelligenten Adressleiste und der Sitzungswiederherstellung.

Von der kostenlosen Virtualisierungssoftware VirtualBox wurde ein neues Major Release veröffentlicht. Die Version 3.0.0 bietet einige neue Funktionen. So ist es erstmals möglich, dem Gastsystem mehrere logische Prozessoren zuzuweisen. Das Konkurrenzprodukt VMware bietet diese Möglichkeit schon lange, ist dabei jedoch auf zwei logische Prozessoren beschränkt, während VirtualBox bis zu 32 Prozessoren unterstützt. Ebenfalls neu ist die Unterstützung von Direct3D 8 und 9 sowie OpenGL 2.0. Ob damit nun auch 3D-Spiele in brauchbarer Geschwindigkeit auf einem virtualisierten System laufen, ist fraglich, schließlich wird die Grafikkarte noch immer emuliert, also in Software nachgebildet, und nicht virtualisiert, d. h. vom Hostsystem an den Gast durchgereicht. Im Falle von Direct3D ist die Unterstützung zudem als experimentell gekennzeichnet. Ferner wurden zahlreiche Fehler beseitigt und einige Detailverbesserungen vorgenommen. Auch die Performance konnte teilweise verbessert werden.
VirtualBox ist für Windows, Mac OS X, Linux und Solaris verfügbar. Zu den unterstützten Gastsystemen zählen neben Windows, Linux und Solaris auch OS/2, DOS und einige BSD-Derivate.

Den ursprünglichen Release Termin für Firefox 3.5 ( 2. Quartal / bis Ende Juni) wird Mozilla wahrscheinlich nicht einhalten können, trotzdem ist in den letzten Tagen nur kurz nach dem zweiten auch der dritte Release Candidate erschienen.
Wie üblich empfiehlt Mozilla die Vorabversion nur Entwicklern und Testern, also nicht für Produktivumgebungen. Eine Liste der Änderungen vom RC2 zum RC3 liegt nicht vor.

Realtek hat mit der Version 2.27 ein neues Treiberpaket für seine High Definition Audio-Codecs veröffentlicht. HDA-Soundchips aus Realteks ALC88x Serie sind z.B. auf vielen AM2, aktuellen AM2+ und neuen AM3 Mainboards anzutreffen und bieten 8-Kanal High Definition Sound. Seit der Version 2.25 ist nun auch ein WHQL-Treiber für Microsofts Windows 7 vorhanden.

Die Entwickler der Mozilla Foundation haben mit der Version 3.0.11 für den im Juni 2008 veröffentlichten Firefox 3 Webbrowser ein Update zum Download bereitgestellt, das mehrere Sicherheitslücken (darunter vier kritische) und Stabilitätsprobleme behebt. Die neue Version ist auch bereits über das programminterne Update erhältlich.
Firefox 3.0.11 behebt mehrere Probleme, die in Firefox 3.0.10 gefunden wurden:

Bereits in der letzten Woche wurde die erste Beta-Version von Opera 10 veröffentlicht. Man bietet unter anderem nun visuelle Tabs und eine nach eigenen Aussagen deutlich verbesserte Geschwindigkeit.
