Realtek hat mit der Version 1.42 ein neues Treiberpaket für seine High Definition Audio-Codecs veröffentlicht. HDA-Soundchips aus Realteks ALC88x Serie sind z.B. auf vielen aktuellen Sockel 939 oder AM2 Mainboards anzutreffen und bieten 8-Kanal High Definition Sound.

ATI hat sein CATALYST Grafikkarten-Treiberpaket in der Version 6.7 zum Download freigegeben. Voraussetzung für das CATALYST Control Center (CCC*) ist ein installiertes Microsoft .NET Framework. The enhanced support allows for CrossFire™ Alternate Frame Rendering mode for Direct3D applications to be forced on by setting the Catalyst® AI slider to the Advanced position. This enhancement is available for all Direct3D applications except for Direct3D applications known not to work with Alternate Frame Rendering.

Nachdem die Entwicklung der Mozilla Websuite im letzten Jahr zugunsten der Einzel-Anwendungen Firefox und Thunderbird eingestellt wurde, fand sich ein unabhängiges Entwickler-Team zusammen, das das Projekt auf Basis der letzten Mozilla Version 1.8 Beta und mit Unterstützung der Mozilla Foundation nun als SeaMonkey Websuite weiterentwickelt (wir berichteten).
The SeaMonkey name was adopted by the project leading group (dubbed "SeaMonkey Council") after considering a long list of community-proposed names - it was decided that the long-lived internal code name still suited the project best. It was no easy decision, but it has a certain appeal - the suite is already known by SeaMonkey within the developer community. The council is working on having this name trademarked with the help of the Mozilla Foundation.
While the Foundation doesn't consider the new SeaMonkey application to be an officially supported upgrade path for Mozilla suite users, it provides the newly founded project with assistance in the form of much-needed project infrastructure, and cooperates with SeaMonkey developers. Development of SeaMonkey produces many improvements which are contributed back to the Mozilla codebase, much of which is shared with products including Firefox and Thunderbird.

Nach Veröffentlichung der Version 1.5 des OpenSource E-Mail Clients Thunderbird im Januar diesen Jahres (wir berichteten), wurde nun mit der Version 1.5.0.5 das dritte Bugfix-Release zum Download bereit gestellt. Neben allgemeinen Fehlerkorrekturen und Verbesserungen in Sachen Stabilität werden mit der neuen Version auch einige Sicherheitslücken beseitigt. Die Thunderbird Entwickler empfehlen daher allen Anwendern ein Update auf diese neue Version.
Seit Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 gibt es für den Mac eine "Universal Binary", die sowohl für PowerPC- als auch Intel-basierte Systeme geeignet ist.

Die neue Version von Skype für Mac ist endlich da. Also schnell Skype für Mac 1.5 Beta herunterladen. Es gibt einige tolle neue Funktionen zu entdecken. Außerdem haben wir das Aussehen noch schicker gemacht und die Bedienung weiter vereinfacht. Am genialsten finde ich aber, daß diese Version dank tatkräftiger Unterstützung aus der Skype-Nutzergemeinschaft auch in einer komplett deutschen (neben einer französischen, spanischen, italienischen, portugiesischen und niederländischen) Übersetzung verfügbar ist. Beim ersten Start dieser neuesten Version wird dir zuerst die runderneuerte Oberfläche auffallen, die speziell für den Mac überarbeitet wurde und schneller und einfacher zu bedienen ist. Exklusiv für den Mac gibt es Funktionen wie abdockbare Anruffenster und anpassbare Chatreiter.
Wir haben es zusätzlich für Mac-Nutzer einfacher gemacht, mit dem Wählhelfer herkömmliche Telefone per SkypeOut anzurufen. Du mußt dir also keine Landesvorwahl mehr merken oder irgendwo heraussuchen, sondern kannst einfach das Land auswählen und mußt dann nur noch die Nummer samt Ortsvorwahl eingeben. Doch damit nicht genug: Mit Hilfe der neuen Importfunktion kannst du deine bestehenden Kontakte aus dem Apple Adressbuch oder Microsoft Entourage unkompliziert per SkypeOut anrufen. Und mit Hilfe des Quickfilters ist das Auffinden von Kontakten einfacher denn je - Tippe einfach die ersten paar Buchstaben des gesuchten Kontaktes ein et voilá du bekommst prompt nur noch all jene Kontakte präsentiert, die diese Kombination enthalten.
Und wenn du zu den eher Wagemutigeren gehörst, haben wir hier auch noch eine Vorschau von Skype für Mac mit Video zusammengestellt. Aber aufgemerkt: Diese Version ist für erfahrene Benutzer gedacht und sollte nicht auf Produktivsystemen genutzt werden, da wir noch daran arbeiten und noch nicht alle Funktionen restlos fehlerfrei zur Verfügung stehen.

Multithreaded version of RAR compression algorithm improves the compression speed on computers with several CPU, dual core CPU and processors with hyperthreading technology. Multithreading is enabled by default, but you can disable it in "General" part of "Settings" dialog. In the command line mode you can control multithreading with -mt switch.
WinRAR can display the folder tree panel allowing to navigate in disk and archive folders. Use "Options/Folder tree" submenu to enable the folder tree. It can be configured separately in file and archive management modes.Folder tree replaces "Browse for folder" command previously available in "File" menu and uses its Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut.
Now WinRAR "Rename" command also works with ZIP archives. Previous versions could rename files only in RAR archives.

EVEREST ist der inoffizielle Nachfolger des System-Analyse-Tools Aida32, dessen Entwicklung im August 2004 aufgegeben wurde (wir berichteten). EVEREST wird inzwischen nur noch als kommerzielle und kostenpflichtige Ultimate- oder Corporate-Edition angeboten. Die Entwicklung und den Vertrieb der kostenlosen Home-Edition hat Lavalys im Dezember 2005 eingestellt.
Bei den Downloads handelt es sich um zeitlich begrenzte und im Funktionsumfang eingeschränkte Testversionen.
Nach einer beinahe endlos scheinenden Entwicklungszeit hat der nLite-Entwickler Dino Nuhagic (nuhi) Ende Juni die finale nLite Version 1.0 veröffentlicht.
nLite ist im Prinzip der Gegenentwurf zu 98lite bzw. XPlite, deren Idee auf das Microsoft Kartellverfahren in den neunziger Jahren zurückgeführt werden kann. Im damaligen Prozess ging es unter anderem um Microsofts Vorgehen gegen die Browser-Konkurrenz von Netscape und die Behauptung, der Internet Explorer sei integraler Bestandteil des Betriebssystems und lasse sich nicht entfernen. Der kostenlos und mit den Windows 9x Betriebssystemen gekoppelte Internet Explorer war einer der Gründe für den Netscape-Niedergang. Dass man den Internet Explorer entgegen Microsofts Bekunden sehr wohl Deinstallieren und damit vom Betriebssystem trennen kann, bewies während des Prozesses Edward Felton, Professor an der Universität Princeton.
Während 98Lite und XPLite kostenpflichtig sind und anbieten, Komponenten aus bestehenden Windows-Installationen zu entfernen, ist nLite nicht nur kostenlos, sondern bietet zudem auch deutlich weitreichendere Möglichkeiten, indem es Windows-Anwendern erlaubt, personalisierte Windows Setup-CDs zu erstellen und dabei nicht nur Komponenten des Betriebssystems wie nicht benötigte Programme oder Dienste usw. zu entfernen, die dann bei einer Neuinstallation erst gar nicht mitinstalliert werden, sondern nLite ermöglicht auch die Integration von Service Packs, Treibern und Hotfixes sowie die Einrichtung einer unbeaufsichtigten Installation und noch einiges mehr.
nLite bietet folgende Optionen ...
nLite unterstützt derzeit Microsofts Windows 2000, XP x86/x64 und 2003 x86/x64 Betriebssysteme und benötigt das .NET Framework 2.0.
Mit Vorsicht sollte man bei der Entfernung von Windows-Komponenten vorgehen. Auch wenn nLite durchaus sinnvolle Voreinstellungen (sicher/empfohlen) anbietet, liegt hier das größte Gefahrenpotential für spätere Fehler und Probleme im Alltagseinsatz mit einer abgespeckten Windows-Installation.
Während man bei früheren Windows 9x Versionen während des Installationsvorganges zumindest teilweise auswählen konnte, welche Komponenten man benötigt und mitinstallieren wollte und welche nicht, lassen Windows 2000 oder XP dem Anwender keine Wahl mehr. Genau mit diesem Mißstand räumt nLite auf und gibt dem Anwender Möglichkeiten an die Hand, das Betriebssystem von unnötigem Ballast zu befreien.
Vor wenigen Tagen wurde mit der Version 1.0.1 ein erstes Update veröffentlicht.

Die Mozilla Entwickler haben eine erste Beta-Version des nächsten Firefox Major-Releases 2.0 veröffentlicht.
Der neue, bisher als "Bon Echo" bezeichnete Firefox-Browser bietet zahlreiche Neuerungen und Verbesserungen gegenüber der aktuellen Version 1.5.x wie z.B. einen integrierten Phishing-Schutz, ein überarbeites Tabbed-Browsing uvm., über das wir bereits bei Veröffentlichung der ersten Alpha-Version berichteten.

Nach Veröffentlichung der OpenOffice Version 2.0.3 (wir berichteten) wurde nun basierend auf der aktuellen Version auch eine neue PrOOo-Box zum Download bereitgestellt.
Die OpenOffice.org PrOOo-Box
Das deutschsprachige Projekt von OpenOffice.org präsentiert mit der PrOOo-Box eine Zusammenstellung der Büro-Suite OpenOffice.org für verschiedene Betriebssysteme mit umfangreicher Zusatz-Software.
Neben diversen Vorlagen, einer umfangreichen Dokumentation, Rechtschreibprüfung für über 60 Sprachen und zusätzlichen Zeichensätzen wurden in der OpenOffice.org-Community auch Programmerweiterungen, Hilfsmittel und Dokumentationen für Entwickler und Marketing-Materialien erstellt. Zur Abrundung des Paketes wurden in die PrOOo-Box auch weitere OpenSource-Programme aufgenommen, auf deren Entwicklung im OpenOffice.org-Projekt derzeit zugunsten der Konzentration auf die vorhandenen Module verzichtet wird.
Dieses umfangreiche Software-Zusammenstellung hat die begrenzten Kapazitäten einer CD gesprengt, so dass jetzt zusätzlich eine DVD als ISO erstellt wurde. Die CD beinhaltet wie in der Vergangenheit die wichtigsten Dateien für Windows, Linux und Mac OS X, alle weiteren Inhalte der DVD stehen als Links auf die Online-Version auch von der CD aus zur Verfügung.
PrOOo-Box CD
Die PrOOo-Box gibt es als bewährte CD, die die gängigsten Installationspakete für OpenOffice.org in der aktuellen deutschen Version enthält: Windows, Linux Intel und Mac OS X PPC.
Viele wichtige Erweiterungen und Tools sind ebenfalls enthalten: Java für Windows und Linux, alle Wörterbücher für die Rechtschreibprüfung, Anleitungen, Vorlagen, Logos, Cover, Cliparts, Schriften, Software Development Kit und URE für Windows - also Materialien, die zu OpenOffice.org gehören.
Freie Open Source Software für den Büroalltag, wie z.B. 7-Zip und Mozilla Produkte, runden das Angebot ab.
PrOOo-Box DVD
Die neue PrOOo-Box DVD mit Paketen für alle verfügbaren Betriebssysteme, die inzwischen den Rahmen einer CD-rom sprengen, enthält zusätzlich zum gesamten CD Inhalt Installationspakete für Debian Linux, FreeBSD 5+6, Mac OS X Intel, Solaris Sparc, Solaris x86 und den Sourcecode.
Der SDK (Software Development Kit) für Entwickler steht hier auch für Linux und Solaris zur Verfügung und wurde mit dem URE (UNO Runtime Environment) ergänzt. Der Softwarebereich ist auch entsprechend im wachsen.
Alle DVD Inhalte sind auch von der CD über externe Links zur Live-Version erreichbar. Zur besseren Unterscheidbarkeit haben wir die Links mit Icons ausgestattet.
Nach Veröffentlichung der inzwischen dritten Beta Version des Internet Explorer 7 im letzten Monat (wir berichteten), hat Microsoft nun auch eine deutsche Sprachversion veröffentlicht.

Der neueste Treiber aus dem Hause Realtek beinhaltet folgende Änderungen bzw. Neuerungen:
Realtek hat mit der Version 1.41 ein neues Treiberpaket für seine High Definition Audio-Codecs veröffentlicht. HDA-Soundchips aus Realteks ALC88x Serie sind z.B. auf vielen aktuellen Sockel 939 oder AM2 Mainboards anzutreffen und bieten 8-Kanal High Definition Sound.

Das RightMark CPU Clock Utility, welches sich zur automatischen Anpassung der Taktrate von CPUs verwenden lässt, ist in einer aktualisierten Version veröffentlicht worden.
Das Tool trägt nun die Versionsnummer 2.1 und erlaubt für jeden Multiplikator das freie Einstellen einer Corespannung und über Profile gesteuert die dynamische Anpassung der Taktrate. Damit lässt sich besonders bei Notebooks im Akkubetrieb Strom sparen und die Temperatur senken, aber auch Desktop-PCs profitieren von niedrigeren Temperaturen und minimiertem Verbrauch.
Die Open Source Mediacenter Software MediaPortal ist in der Version 0.2.0.0 erschienen.

Der AMD Dual-Core Optimizer für AMD Athlon 64 X2 und AMD Turion 64 X2 Prozessoren synchronisiert die Time Stamp Counter (TSC) MSRs bei AMDs Dual-Core Prozessoren.
Heise online hat das Problem von Threads, die sich per Timestamp-Counter synchronisieren und dabei aus dem Takt geraten, bereits Ende letzten Jahres unter dem Titel "Zeitmissmanagement" beschrieben.
Die Beschreibung von AMD:
"The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core or multiple processor systems."
Nach Veröffentlichung einer zeitlich eingeschränkten Beta-Version Anfang Juni (wir berichteten) hat Creative Labs nun den Treiber 2.09.0001 als finale Version veröffentlicht.
Die Anmerkungen zur Beta- gelten auch für die finale Version des Treibers. Der Treiber adressiert laut den Release Notes ausdrücklich nicht generell die Ursache für die sogenannten "crackling"-Probleme, also Geräuschartefakte wie "knistern" oder "knacksen", sondern behebt allenfalls einige spezifische Probleme.

AMD hat den für Cool'n'Quiet nötigen Prozessor-Treiber in einer neuen Version herausgebracht, ein Changelog liegt wie üblich nicht vor.

Nachdem Anfang April die erste Beta der nächsten WinRAR Version 3.60 veröffentlich wurde, ist nun seit kurzem die sechste Beta-Version verfügbar, bei der einige kleinere Probleme behoben wurden.
Mit der Version 3.60 bietet WinRAR erstmals eine Unterstützung für Dual-Core CPUs wie z.B. AMDs Athlon 64 X2.

Switch -ad did not work in GUI winrar.exe.
When repairing several archives, console RAR did not handle 'No' choice of overwrite archive request properly. It aborted the operation instead of skipping the current archive.

GUI winrar.exe ignored -mt switch and always used "Multithreading" option from "Settings" dialog. Fixed now.
Correction in -ilog switch. In some situation the current date was not written to rar.log file.

Multithreaded version of RAR compression algorithm improves the compression speed on computers with several CPU, dual core CPU and processors with hyperthreading technology. Multithreading is enabled by default, but you can disable it in "General" part of "Settings" dialog. In the command line mode you can control multithreading with -mt switch.
WinRAR can display the folder tree panel allowing to navigate in disk and archive folders. Use "Options/Folder tree" submenu to enable the folder tree. It can be configured separately in file and archive management modes.Folder tree replaces "Browse for folder" command previously available in "File" menu and uses its Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut.
Now WinRAR "Rename" command also works with ZIP archives. Previous versions could rename files only in RAR archives.
Added decompression of LZH archives created with "-lh7-" algorithm.
New "Remove duplicate folders from extraction path" option in "Settings/Compression" dialog.If this option is on and you unpack an archive which root folder has no files and only one 'somename' folder and if destination folder is new or empty and also ends with '/somename', WinRAR will exclude one 'somename' from resulting 'somename/somename' path.
New "Define volume sizes..." button in "Settings/Compression". This button activates "Define volume sizes" dialog. Here you can customize the list of predefined volume sizes associated with "Split to volumes, bytes" field in archiving dialog.
Speed of RAR general compression increased for some data types. Depending on data type and size the gain may achieve 5 - 15%.
New "Rename automatically" option in the extraction dialog and command line -or switch to rename extracted files automatically if file with the same name already exists. You can also enable the auto-renaming mode directly from the overwrite confirmation prompt with "Rename All" button.Renamed files will get names like 'filename(N).txt', where 'filename.txt' is the original file name and 'N' is a number.
"Set modification time" option in "Advanced" part of extraction dialog is accessible also for ZIP archives. Previously it could be changed only for RAR archives.
"Multithreading" option added to "Benchmark and hardware test" command, so you can compare performance of usual and multithreaded versions of RAR compression algorithm.
New 'ch' (change archive parameters) command line mode command. Its purpose is to apply switches like -av, -tl and -cl to archive.
New 'cv' command line mode command. It provides the command line interface to WinRAR "Convert archives" command. It is supported only by winrar.exe, not by rar.exe.
New command line -sl and -sm switches to set size limits of processing files.
New command line -fcu[file] switch allows to read archive comments from Unicode files. It also modifies behavior of "cw" command, setting the comment output format to Unicode.
7Z added to list of formats stored without compression when using -ms switch without a parameter.
Switch -e[+] is now supported by most of command line operations including extracting and deleting files. Previously it was supported by only archiving command.
It is allowed to use environment variables in archive name in archiving dialog, in destination path in extraction dialog, in folder names on "Compression" and "Paths" pages in WinRAR settings. For example, you can enter '%temp%' in "Folder for temporary files" field.
VIA hat eine neue Version des Hyperion Pro Treiber-Paketes veröffentlicht. Der Hyperion Pro bietet im Gegensatz zu VIAs Hyperion 4in1 Support für 64-Bit Windows Betriebssysteme und umfasst zusätzlich Treiber für VIA SATA/Raid-Controller.
Laut VIA ist das Paket für alle VIA-Chipsätze geeignet, insbesondere aber für die KT4##, P4X4## Serien und neuere Produkte.
