Der beliebte Mediaplayer Winamp ist in einer neuen Version 5 erschienen, vorläufig noch als Alpha-Release. Versionsmäßig schließt diese direkt an die Beta 2.95 an und besitzt auch all deren Features wie CD Ripping, Media Library und Video Playback. Von Winamp3 sind bisher die Freeform Skins und das ein oder andere Plug-In hinzugekommen.
Opera Software hat seinen alternativen Internet-Browser in der Version 7.20 für einen Public Betatest freigegeben. Seit der letzten offiziellen Version 7.11 wurden etliche Punkte verbessert, wie man der Fixliste entnehmen kann.
Nachdem Ahead vor ein paar Wochen bereits seine neue Version 6 des Brennprogramms Nero Burning Rom vorgestellt hatte, haben die Karlsbader heute noch einmal ein Update für die alte Version 5.5 nachgeschoben. Eine Fixliste dazu ist noch nicht online. Man darf aber davon ausgehen, daß wie üblich neue Brenner hinzugefügt wurden.

Microsoft hat für seinen Internet Explorer wieder einen aktualisierten Patch veröffentlicht, in dem einige Sicherheitslücken geschlossen wurden. Ein interessanter Hinweis für Opera und Mozilla-User:

Der Fehler kann also auch jene Anwender betreffen, die den IE normalerweise zum Surfen gar nicht nutzen.

VIA hat für seine Chipsätze neue Treiber der Version 4.49 veröffentlicht. Neu hinzugekommen ist die AGP-Unterstützung für Windows Server 2003 über eine spezielle INF-Datei. Weitere eventuelle Fixes werden wir nachreichen, sobald bekannt.
Asus hat für die ALi MAGiK 1 Mainboards der A7A-Serie neue Beta-BIOS Versionen veröffentlicht. Wie üblich bei Beta-Version hat Asus keine Fixliste dazu veröffentlicht. Eine Release-Beschreibung aus dem Praxiseinsatz erreichte uns jedoch von Leser Pitt G.:
Interessantestes Feature war der frei waehlbare Multiplikator. Ich lies testweise einen Athlon XP 2400+ (15*133) mit 18 mal 100 MHz laufen. Auf dem Tawain FTP Server ist sie allerdings schon wieder verschwunden aus welchem Grund auch immer. Wer Sie noch ziehen möchte sollte auf dem deutschen Server sein Glück versuchen.
Ferner darf man davon ausgehen, daß Asus einige neue CPU-Typen in die Erkennung eingebunden hat.

Der neue Internet-Wurm MS Blaster (auch Lovesan, Lovsan oder MSBlast genannt) treibt aktuell sein Unwesen im Internet. Anders als die meisten bekannten Internet-Würmer verschickt sich dieser Schädling nicht per eMail, um den Leichtsinn der Anwender beim Öffnen von Attachements auszunutzen, sondern überträgt sich direkt über offene Ports auf einen am Internet angeschlossenen PC.
Typisches Zeichen eines Angriffs mit MS Blaster ist z.B. das Herunterfahren des Rechners mit der Fehlermeldung, daß der Remoteprozeduraufruf-Dienst (RPC) beendet worden sei und der Rechner daher heruntergefahren wird. Die Gefahr, die von diesem Wurm und seinen Mutanten ausgeht, wird als sehr kritisch eingestuft. Betroffen sind alle Anwender mit Microsoft NT-Kern Betriebssystemen, also Windows NT, 2000, XP und 2003.
Um sich gegen den Wurm zu schützen empfiehlt Microsoft mittels Personal Firewall (Zonealarm, Tiny, etc.) diverse Ports zu sperren: TCP 135, 139, 445, 593 und 4444, sowie die UDP-Ports 135, 137, 138 und 69, und/oder die XP-eigene Firewall zu aktivieren. Ferner wird empfohlen, den hoffentlich installierten Virenscanner auf den neuesten Stand zu bringen.
Mittlerweile existieren auch etliche Patches und Tools, um das MS Blaster Problem in den Griff zu bekommen.

So hat Leser Hako einen umfassenden How-To Guide erstellt für Leute, die sich vor dem Wurm schützen wollen ebenso, wie für die Säuberung bereits infizierter Rechner. Ferner läuft momentan eine Leser-initiierte Umfrage bezüglich des Ausmaßes des Schadens, den MS Blaster angerichtet hat...

Und wieder gab es ein Update für das Grafikkarten-Konfigurations Tool aTuner. Gegenüber der Vorgängerversion gab es folgende Änderungen:

Es gibt wieder einen neuen Detonator-Treiber in der Version 45.23 von NVIDIA. Die Version für Windows XP ist im Gegensatz zur Version für Windows 95/98 und ME WHQL zertifiziert. Der neue Treiber bringt folgende Released Notes mit:

Ahead hat für sein Brennprogramm Nero Burning Rom ein weiteres Update der Version 6.0.0.11 nachgeschoben. Ferner aktualisiert wurden die Module NeroVision Express und Nero MediaPlayer. Eine detaillierte Fixliste steht zum Zeitpunkt dieser Meldung noch aus.
Abit hat für die nForce2 Mainboards NF7 und NF7-S der Revision 1 und 2 vor einigen Tagen ein neues BIOS der Version 18 respektive 21 veröffentlicht. Es beinhaltet folgende Fixes:
NF7 2.0 & NF7-S 2.0: Fixed the problem that system hangs up with POST code 01 while resuming from STR mode with user defined DRAM timings. With default SPD setting, no problem at all and doesn't need this update. Fixed the problem that system hangs up at POST code FF with over clocking setting- change the multiplier factor from CPU default to 19. Fixed the problem that Barton 2500+ CPU is occasionally detected as Barton 3200+. If 400 FSB CPU is installed, users need to select correct CPU type in SoftMenuIII by themselves. Update: Die Versionen 21 bzw. 18, die bei Abit bereits auf der Homepage verlinkt sind, wurden offenbar vom Taiwan-FTP genommen. In der Zwischenzeit sind die Vorgängerversionen 20 und 17 die neuesten angebotenen Versionen.
Vor ein paar Tagen hat Microsoft eine aktualisierte Version ihres Patches 823980 veröffentlicht, der eine Sicherheitslücke stopfen soll, die es einem Angreifer erlaubt, einen Buffer-Overrun zu erzeugen und damit schadhaften Code auf dem angegriffenen Rechner auszuführen. Der Bug wird von Microsoft als kritisch eingestuft. Betroffen sind alle Windows-Versionen mit NT-Kern.
