Die Opensource-DVD ist in der Version 20.0 erschienen. Das Programmpaket enthält wie der Name schon sagt ausschließlich OpenSource-Programme. Das freie Vektorgrafik-Programm Inkscape ist in der Version 0.48 verfügbar. Mit dem Programm lassen sich Vektorgrafiken wie Logos, Diagramme oder Schriftzüge erstellen und bearbeiten. Damit eignet sich Inkscape z.B. auch für die Produktion von Plakaten oder Flyern. Die Entwickler des von Inkscape achten dabei vor allem auf die Konformität zum SVG-Standard.

Das kostenlose Hardware/Windows-Diagnoseprogramm PC Wizard von CPUID ist in der Version 2010.1.95 verfügbar. Es wartet ähnlich wie Everest, HWiNFO32 und SIW mit vielen Funktionen der Kategorien Hardware Information, System Information und System Benchmarks auf.
Bei Problemen mit CPUID-Produkten kann im offiziellen Forum (Link s. u.) direkt mit den Entwicklern kommuniziert werden, diese lassen einem auch schonmal eine speziell angepasste Beta-Version zukommen.

Der freie Mediaplayer VLC media player ist in Version 1.1.4 verfügbar. Das Programm unterstützt bereits von Haus aus unzählige Audio- und Video-Codecs und wird für eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Betriebssysteme bereitgestellt. Eine Übersicht der bereits integrierten Codecs und der unterstützten Plattformen zeigt eine Feature-Übersicht. Der VLC media player wird als Freie Software unter der GNU General Public License angeboten. Der Player hebt sich von vielen anderen Programmen unter anderem dadurch hervor, dass er auch unvollständige oder gar noch im Download befindliche Videodateien abspielen kann.
Zu den neuen Funktionen seit Version 1.1.0 zählte u.a. die Unterstützung für GPU Decoding unter Windows Vista bzw. Windows 7 sowie unter Linux. Allerdings bedauerte man anfangs, dass man unter Windows die Verwendung von NVIDIA GPUs empfehlen musste, da die Treiber für ATI GPUs einen Fehler beinhalten sollen und man leider keine passende Hardware zur Verfügung hat, um Decoding auf Intel GPUs zu unterstützen.
Kurz nach dem Erscheinen kündigte man dann aber an, dass auch die ATI GPUs ab der ATI Radeon 4000 Serie nach einem Treiberupdate auf den mittlerweile erschienenen ATI Catalyst 10.7 ab Version 1.1.1 des VLC media player in den Genuss der GPU-Beschleunigung kommen. Dazu arbeitete man mit den Treiberentwicklern bei AMD eng zusammen.
Windows wird ab Windows 2000 unterstützt, für Windows 95/98/Me steht noch die ältere Version 0.8.6i zur Verfügung. Mac OS X wird ab 10.5 unterstützt.

Bereits kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des monatlichen Grafiktreiber-Updates hat AMD eine neue Version des Catalyst Application Profiles (CAP) nachgeschoben. Mit den neuen Profilen sollen CrossFireX Systeme in den Computerspielen "Aliens vs. Predators" und "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" deutlich besser skalieren. Damit reagiert das Unternehmen kurzfristig auf die Beobachtungen von HardOCP, wonach in diesen Spielen auch mit dem aktuellen ATI Catalyst 10.8 die gleichen schlechten Werte zu verzeichnen sind. Mit den neuen Profilen konnten die Kollegen in "Aliens vs. Predators" um 70% und in "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" um 44% gesteigerte durchschnittliche Frameraten messen.
Seit dem ATI Catalyst 10.2 hat AMD das ATI CrossFireX Application Profile aus dem eigentlichen Treiber herausgelöst, sodass Updates dieser Profile wesentlich schneller den Kunden zugänglich gemacht werden können. Mit den monatlich veröffentlichten AMD-Catalyst-Treiberpaketen werden wie bisher immer alle zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung aktuellen CAPs (Catalyst Application Profiles) ausgeliefert. In den sporadisch veröffentlichten Updates dieser Profile sind nur die jeweils angegebenen Änderungen enthalten.
Um die installierten Profile auf dem aktuellsten Stand zu halten, müssen Besitzer von AMD-Radeon-Grafikkarten sämtliche CAP-Updates installieren, die seit dem Erscheinen des auf ihrem System installierten AMD-Catalyst-Treiberpakets veröffentlicht wurden.
Im aktualisierten "ATI CrossFireX Application Profile", das zu allen Treibern ab dem ATI Catalyst 10.2 kompatibel ist, sollen folgende Verbesserungen enthalten sein:

Die Grundversion ist recht simpel gehalten, lässt sich aber durch Plugins aufhübschen und um weitere Funktionen ergänzen. Eine aktuelle deutsche Sprachdatei für das Programm gibt es hier.
Miranda IM läuft unter Windows ab Windows 95, dabei ist die ANSI-Version für Win9x/Me und die Unicode-Version ab Windows NT vorgesehen.

Das Standard-Programm zur Darstellung von PDF-Dateien, der Reader von Adobe, hat ein Security-Update außerhalb des sonst üblichen Update-Zyklus auf Version 9.3.4 bzw. 8.2.4 erfahren. Das nächste planmäßige Update soll erst am 12. Oktober veröffentlicht werden. Das Update behebt zwei kritische, Sicherheitslücken, die den Reader zum Absturz bringen können oder gar einem Angreifern erlauben, die Kontrolle über das betroffene System zu übernehmen. Am einfachsten kann die Aktualisierung über die integrierte Update-Funktion bezogen werden.
Das PDF-Format wird inzwischen erheblich für Angriffe auf User verwendet, indem kompromittierender Schadcode in die Dateien eingefügt wird. Laut Erhebungen des Anti-Viren Software-Herstellers F-Secure im Sommer des letzten Jahres soll das PDF-Format mittlerweile sogar der Träger Nummer 1 sein, wenn es darum geht Schadcode "an den Mann zu bringen".
Der aktuelle Adobe Reader läuft unter Windows ab Windows 2000 SP4, Mac OS X und Linux/UNIX. Eine schlanke Alternative ist Foxit Reader.

I just released 1.7.6-1. This release fixes a bunch of bugs, and introduces a few new features. It also contains a change which will affect calling native Win32 API functions from Cygwin applications.
I would like to urge you to have another look into the documentation at http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/cygwin-ug-net.html. It contains a couple of improvements and the description for new features and changes from old behaviour.

Das freie Simulationsspiel OpenTTD ist in der Version 1.0.3 verfügbar. Es wurden wieder einmal sehr viele Bugs, aber auch eine Sicherheitslücke, behoben. Außerdem wurde das wurde das für die Musik zuständige Paket OpenMSX am 10. August in der neuen Version 3.1 veröffentlicht.
Wer Mitte der 90er schon am PC gespielt hat, kennt sicher noch Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Die freie Implementierung namens OpenTTD macht es möglich sich diesen Klassiker wieder einmal anzuschauen. Will man die Originaldateien für Grafik, Sound und Musik verwenden, so benötigt man eine Transport Tycoon Deluxe CD. Mittlerweile sind aber die Projekte OpenGFX, OpenSFX und OpenMSX, welche für freie Grafiken und Sounds bzw. Musik sorgen, so weit, dass man ohne die Originaldateien auskommt.
Weiterhin ist OpenTTD nicht nur ein einfacher Klon, sondern bringt auch viele Neuerungen mit. So gibt es einen integrierten Multiplayer-Modus, der IP-basierte Spiele mit bis zu 255 Teilnehmern zulässt und auch dedizierte Server unterstützt. Darüberhinaus sind zahlreiche Erweiterungen im Spiel vorhandener Objekte verfügbar. Ein interessantes Paket ist z.B. Infrastructure Sharing - damit lassen sich je nach Einstellung Bahnstrecken, Straßen und/oder Flughäfen durch andere Mitspieler gegen eine Gebühr benutzen.
Im Gegensatz zum Original läuft OpenTTD nicht nur unter DOS und Windows, sondern auch unter Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, OS/2 und auf weiteren Plattformen.

Properly detect HTTP proxy server use when the HTTP proxy is the global proxy server, an account-level non-HTTP proxy server is configured, and the "Use account proxy for HTTP and HTTPS requests" account option is turned off. This fixes connecting for some HTTP proxy servers.
Fall back to connecting to scsa.msg.yahoo.com (not configurable) if the HTTP-based connect server lookup fails. This does not work for Yahoo JAPAN accounts.
Fix file transfers that get stuck with "Waiting for transfer to begin".
Zwei Monate nach dem Release des Adobe Flash Players 10.1 hat Adobe heute mit der Version 10.1.82.76 die erste Aktualisierung veröffentlicht. Adobe stopft mit der neuen Version sechs Sicherheitslöcher, die zu Abstürzen führen können oder gar potentiellen Angreifern erlauben, die Kontrolle über das System zu erlangen. Daher empfiehlt das Unternehmen die sofortige Installation des Updates.
Für ältere Betriebssysteme, die vom Adobe Flash Player 10.1 nicht unterstützt werden, bietet Adobe ebenfalls eine aktualisierte Version des Adobe Flash Player 9 zum Download an.
Der Player integriert sich als Plugin in die Browser Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera und Safari und wird zur Darstellung von Flash-gestützten Internet-Seiten benötigt, auf denen Flash-Animationen oder in Flash eingebettete Mediadateien, wie z.B. die Videos bei YouTube, bereitgestellt werden. Nutzer des Google Chrome bekommen die jeweils aktuelle Version des Flash Players über die in den Browser integrierte automatische Updatefunktion ausgeliefert. Eine manuelle Installation ist also nicht notwendig. Wer seine aktuell installierte Version überprüfen will, kann das hier tun.
Zu den wichtigsten neuen Features des Flash Players 10.1 gehört neben der verbesserten Speicherverwaltung und einer allgemein gesteigerten Performance vor allem die H.264-Videobeschleunigung mit Hilfe unterstützter GPUs und Hardware-Videodecoder. Die korrekte Funktion der GPU-Beschleunigung setzt einen aktuellen Grafiktreiber voraus. Seit der Version 10.1.82.76 ist die H.264-Beschleunigung nicht mehr auf Windows beschränkt. Besitzer von Macintosh-Rechnern können ab Mac OS X 10.6.3 dieses Feature ebenfalls nutzen, wenn die verwendete Grafikkarte vom "Apple Video Decode Acceleration framework" unterstützt wird. Das trifft aktuell nur auf die Modelle NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M und GeForce GT 330M zu.

Das Projekt des russischen Entwicklers Artyom Izmajlov orientiert sich stark an Winamp, kommt jedoch viel schlanker daher. Das Hardware Monitoring Tool Core Temp ist kürzlich in der Version 0.99.7.3 erschienen.
Mit dem kleinen, kostenlosen Programm lassen sich - ähnlich wie mit HWMonitor oder SpeedFan - alle Kern-Temperaturen der verbauten CPU(s) auslesen und loggen. Außerdem zeigt das Programm die Minimal- und Maximaltemperatur einer Sitzung an. Um vor einem Hardware-Schaden zu schützen, gibt es eine Overheat protection, welche eine Meldung beim Erreichen der selbst festgelegten kritischen Temperatur ausgibt.
Core Temp läuft unter Windows ab Windows XP und ist einer 32Bit und einer 64Bit-Version verfügbar.

CDBurnerXP ist eine kostenlose, mehrsprachige Brennsoftware für Windows zum Brennen von CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays und HD-DVDs. Mit einer sinnvollen Auswahl an Features bieten die Entwickler eine schlanke und gute Alternative zu den heutigen kommerziellen Schwergewichten wie der Nero Suite an.
Nun ist das Programm in der fehlerbereinigten Version 4.3.7.2316 verfügbar.
Das Programm setzt die Installation des .NET Framework Version 2.0 oder höher voraus und läuft unter Windows ab Windows 2000. Die 32Bit Versionen laufen auch unter 64Bit Systemen.
Hinweis:
Die Installer enthalten OpenCandy, was ähnlich wie die ehemals verwendete Ask-Toolbar eine Art Adware ist, wenn auch nicht ganz so heimtückisch - nicht davon betroffen sind die Portable-Versionen.

Realtek hat bereits am 21. Juli neue Treiber für einige der hauseigenen Netzwerk-Chips veröffentlicht. Diese Chips sind auf vielen Mainboards und Netzwerkkarten verbaut und umfassen sowohl die 10/100 MBit (Fast Ethernet) als auch die 10/100/1000 MBit (Gigabit Ethernet) Schnittstellen für PCI und PCI-E. Über Änderungen gibt Realtek auch dieses Mal keine Auskunft.
Der Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) ist in der neuen Version 2.2 erschienen. Der MBSA überprüft sowohl lokale System als auch Remotecomputer auf typische Sicherheitsprobleme sowie auf fehlende Updates bei allerlei Microsoft Anwendungen, wie dem Windows Betriebssystem, Microsoft Office, dem SQL Server. Downloadlink in Überprüfungsberichten wurde entfernt, da es nicht mehr möglich ist, das richtige Paket in einem Bündel mit mehreren Paketen zu identifizieren und die meisten Updates mittlerweile als Bündel veröffentlicht werden.
Die Produktversion wurde aus dem Cacheverzeichnispfad (jetzt C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\\Lokale Einstellungen\Anwendungsdaten\Microsoft\MBSA\Cache) entfernt.
Realtek hat mit der Version 2.51 ein neues Treiberpaket für seine High Definition Audio-Codecs veröffentlicht. HDA-Soundchips aus Realteks ALC88x Serie sind z.B. auf vielen AM2, aktuellen AM2+ und neuen AM3 Mainboards anzutreffen und bieten 8-Kanal High Definition Sound.
Passend zum HD Audio-Codec Treiber gibt es den Realtek HDMI-Codec Treiber, welcher für den HDMI-Codec auf den ATI Radeon Karten mit HDMI-Ausgang notwendig ist, in der aktuellen Version 2.49 und den High Definition Audio-Codec Treiber für Linux in der Version 5.15rc5.

Das kostenlose Grafikkarten-Tool GPU Caps Viewer ist in der Version 1.9.0 verfügbar. Ähnlich wie GPU-Z und der Graphics-Tab von CPU-Z liest es Informationen über die Grafikkarte aus, zusätzlich lassen sich auch noch Demos für OpenGL (1.2 / 2.1 / 3.x) und OpenCL (GPU / CPU) abpielen. Für die OpenCL-Demos benötigt man das jeweilige OpenCL SDK.
